Did you know that about 86 percent of melanoma skin cancer cases can be attributed to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun?

 BHWT - Solar Window Tinting08

Recently, the Asher family contacted me about solar window tinting their Fort Myers home, so I thought it seemed appropriate, since May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month, to share their story.

Mr. and Mrs. Asher have a happy, little one year old. They dedicated the back room in their home to being their daughter’s playroom because of its great view of the trees and birds that she loves so much. Unfortunately, along with a great view, comes a lot of sunlight. So much so that they worried about the sun’s powerful UV rays harming their daughter’s sensitive, unprotected skin.

After visiting their home, I discovered that her playroom is lined with 4 western facing windows and 2 sliding glass doors. By mid afternoon the temperature in that room was at least 10 degrees warmer than the rest of the house. Their wood floors and furniture had also begun to fade.

BHWT - Solar Window Tinting01By applying solar window film to their home, we’re going to help the Ashers:

  • protect their daughter’s skin from harmful UV rays
  • save their flooring and furniture from further fading
  • improve their home’s energy efficiency.

I took measurements and showed them two shades of LLumar window film that I highly recommend. Both options block 99% of UV rays, the main difference will be in the overall energy efficiency of their windows. The DR15 window film reduces summer heat gail by 70%, while the DR25 offers a 59% reduction. Either way, I have no doubts that this family is going to be much better off than they were before!

With their home window tinting scheduled for the end this month, I’ll keep you posted about the process and their results!

Since this month is all about promoting Skin Cancer Awareness, I’d also like to point out that dermatologists have found that patients in the US often have more sun damage on the left sides of their faces which can lead to different kinds of skin cancers. Why? Research points to UV rays coming through car windows as the leading cause.

If you, or someone you love, doesn’t have their home or car windows tinted yet, I encourage you to take the time to do so soon! Living in Southwest Florida allows us to enjoy the sunshine more days out of the year than many other states, but it also means we have to be extra careful with our skin.
